Read the story of how Thriving supported an individual with complex needs to travel safely to South Africa and experience a life-changing holiday with confidence and independence.

For many people, going on holiday is an opportunity to relax, explore somewhere new, and spend quality time making memories. For Michael, an adult living with complex support needs, travelling to South Africa required thoughtful planning and the right support in place to make the experience safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

At Thriving, we were asked to provide specialist one-to-one support throughout the trip, ensuring Michael could travel confidently while continuing to receive the consistent, person-centred care he relies on every day.

Building Confidence Before the Journey

International travel can be overwhelming for anyone. Airports, long journeys, changes in routine, unfamiliar environments, and managing medication abroad can all create additional pressure, particularly for individuals with complex needs.

Before the trip, our focus was on understanding Michael as a person, not just the practicalities of his care needs. We worked closely with his wider support network to build a detailed understanding of his routines, communication preferences, health requirements, and the type of support that would help him feel comfortable and confident throughout the journey.

A dedicated support worker was carefully selected based not only on experience, but also on personality, adaptability, and the ability to build trust. Establishing that relationship before travelling was an important part of helping Michael feel reassured ahead of the trip.

Support That Enabled Independence

Throughout the holiday, Michael received one-to-one support tailored to his individual needs. From navigating busy airports to supporting daily routines and medication management, the aim was always to provide the right level of support while encouraging as much independence as possible.

With reassurance and consistency in place, Michael was able to take part in the experience fully. He explored new surroundings, enjoyed activities during the trip, and experienced the freedom and excitement that travel can bring.

For his family and wider support network, knowing that someone familiar, capable, and compassionate was supporting him provided peace of mind throughout the holiday.

A Meaningful Outcome

The trip was a huge success, not simply because it went smoothly, but because it allowed Michael to experience something meaningful in a safe and supported way.

At Thriving, we believe high-quality care should create opportunities, not limitations. This case reflects the importance of truly person-centred support and the impact the right care can have on confidence, independence, and quality of life.
