Read the story of how Thriving supported an individual with a brain injury and complex needs to travel safely to France and enjoy a week pursuing one of his greatest passions.
For David, fishing is much more than a hobby. It provides purpose, enjoyment, and an opportunity to spend time doing something he genuinely loves. As part of his ongoing rehabilitation journey following an acquired brain injury, a seven-day fishing trip to France presented an exciting opportunity to build confidence, maintain independence, and create lasting memories.
At Thriving, we were asked to provide specialist support throughout the trip, ensuring David could travel safely while continuing to receive the personalised support he relies on every day.
Careful Planning for a Complex Journey
David currently receives support to help him live as independently as possible, splitting his time between living at home and developing the skills needed to progress towards more independent living. He also experiences regular seizures throughout the day, which can be triggered when he becomes overwhelmed, making detailed planning essential before any travel could take place.
To ensure continuity and familiarity, three experienced support workers who already knew David well were selected to accompany him on the trip. Their existing relationship meant they understood his routines, communication style, triggers, and the support strategies that help him feel comfortable and confident.
Working closely with the wider case management team, detailed planning sessions were carried out in advance. Risk assessments were completed for every stage of the journey, from travelling through France to managing activities at the fishing venue itself.
Particular attention was given to seizure management and fatigue. The team carefully planned regular breaks throughout the long drive to reduce the risk of David becoming overwhelmed, while clear contingency plans were developed to ensure support could be adapted quickly if needed.
Supporting Safety Without Limiting Independence
The goal throughout the trip was not simply to provide care, but to enable David to enjoy the experience as independently as possible while remaining safe.
As fishing took place in open water, additional safeguards were implemented. Two support workers were always present during waterside activities, ensuring David could focus on enjoying his time fishing while receiving the support needed to manage any potential risks.
Alongside supporting his health and well-being, the team encouraged David to take part in every aspect of the trip. From exploring local sights to spending time with others and enjoying the journey itself, the support provided was tailored to help him get the most from the experience.
Because the team already knew David well, they were able to recognise when he needed reassurance, when he needed space, and when he was ready to embrace new experiences.
A Meaningful Outcome
The trip was a huge success. David was able to spend a full week doing something he is passionate about while travelling safely and confidently with the support of a trusted team.
Beyond the fishing itself, he enjoyed seeing new places, experiencing a different environment, and taking part in activities that may not have been possible without the right support in place.
For David, the holiday represented much more than a week away. It was an opportunity to continue building confidence, independence, and quality of life while demonstrating that complex needs should never be a barrier to meaningful experiences.
At Thriving, we believe great care is about creating opportunities. Through careful planning, specialist support, and a person-centred approach, we help individuals achieve goals, pursue passions, and live life on their own terms.
